Parents Get Bodies of Children Burnt in Uganda School After DNA Tests
April 20, 2008
Over eighteen parents whose children perished in a school inferno near Kampala early this week have been given the charred remains for burial after the chemists completed the DNA tests to ascertain the identities.
A police officer, Moses Baliomoyo said on Saturday that blood samples had to be removed from parents to be compared with their children’s bodies which had been burnt beyond recognition and transported to a public hospital mortuary in polythene bags.
According to Uganda police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, the identification work had been completed Saturday afternoon and they have started giving away the bodies to their rightful owners.
She called upon all those who lost their children to go to the Mulago hospital in Kampala for the bodies of their remains.
Meanwhile, a group of parents and sympathizers on Saturday demonstrated at the school demanding for the arrest of those who set fire to the dormitory and for the release of the bodies of all those who died.
Carrying placards with varying messages condemning the police and school administration for their negligence, the parents said they were tired of government commissions of inquiry whose findings are never released or enforced.
