The Peace and Security Council of the African Union is scheduled to go on a field mission to Sudan from March 17 to 19 2013 during which its officials will engage with local stakeholders and the leadership of the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) about opportunities for enhancing the operation of the mission and the search for lasting peace in the country.
According to a press statement from the AU on Thursday, the overall objective of the mission is to demonstrate solidarity with those in conflict-affected areas of Darfur and reiterate support to UNAMID in the pursuit of an all-inclusive political process.
“While in Khartoum, the Council will undertake consultations with the Sudanese authorities and other stakeholders to get firsthand information on the progress made towards an inclusive Darfur political process and the support given to UNAMID with regard to the accomplishment of its mandate” the statement said.
The AU mission will also visit El Fasher, Kabkabiya and Nyala in Darfur, to stock of UNAMID’s operations with respect to security, economic recovery and humanitarian assistance.
“The PSC will use the opportunity to express its support to UNAMID and encourage all stakeholders in Darfur to extend the necessary cooperation to UNAMID towards the promotion of an all-inclusive political process”.
