Photo-journalist Found Dead in Nairobi Was New Zealand National
May 30, 2008
The Irish Foreign Office has identified a man found dead on Wednesday with head injuries in the Kenya capital Nairobi as a New Zealand-born photographer working out of western Ireland.
Trent Keegan, who was in his early 30s, had spent the past decade traveling around the world while developing his business.
Until recently, he lived in Galway where he continued to work as a freelance photographer.
His work had appeared in a number of mainstream Irish newspapers and magazines.
Officials believed that the New Zealander had been in Africa for less than a month.
“Initial observations showed that the body had visible injuries on the head”, said the police spokesman, who also revealed that an inquest file has been opened to establish the cause of death.
A police statement says Keegan’s body was found “in a drainage trench” near the main highway that runs through the Nairobi capital.
The statement further says that a document found on his body indicated that the dead man was a photographer by the name of Trent Keegan.
But the document found was an Irish driving license bearing a picture of the photographer. This probably made the Kenyan police identify him as Irish.
Officials say the award-winning photographer is understood to have lived in Ireland for about three years.
