Plane Crash Kills Several in Goma, Eastern DR Congo

April 15, 2008

A Congolese airline plane missed its takeoff Tuesday in Goma in North-Kivu (eastern DRC) and crashed in a populated district, APA learned from corroborating sources in this eastern province.

The Hewa Bora Airways (HBA) plane was bound for Kisangani and had onboard 79 passengers and five crew members, the same sources indicated.

According to first indications, 11 passengers and 5 crew members survived the crash.

The technicians of the DRC Air traffic control (RVA) are yet to determine the causes.

The speaker of the National Assembly, Vital Kamerhe, confirmed the crash and had to suspend a plenary session on an amnesty bill.

The Goma crash comes after that of Antonov 26 last 4 October in a Kinshasa district in which thirty people died.
