Hundreds of Guineans supporting former Prime Minister Sidya Toure who came third in the June presidential race were dispersed Monday as they were trying to rally downtown in protest against the provisional results of the elections.
Many red-clad youths and women stormed the Party’s headquarters near the “8 November Bridge”, the main gateway to Kaloum which is Conakry’s administrative and business hub and stronghold of the Republican Forces Union’s candidate, Sidya Toure.
From the party’s headquarters, the supporters headed to the Supreme Court building, through the Kameroun cemetery before holding up the traffic and creating endless traffic jams.
Afterwards, they gathered on the “8 November Bridge” where they were stopped by the officers from the ad hoc Electoral Process Securing Squad (FOSSEPEL).
Some clashes erupted between the two sides and the FOSSEPEL used teargas to disperse the demonstrators who were fleeing in terror, creating some traffic jam on the “8 November Bridge”.
On Saturday, the UFR leader had overtly challenged the provisional results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Toure claimed the second place conferred to Professor Alpha Conde, as he said at least 300, 000 of his votes were stolen.
According to the electoral watchdog, the political parties have eight days to submit their appeal to the Supreme Court.
The presidential runoff is billed for 18 July, pitting top Cellou Dalein Diallo against second-placed Alpha Conde.
