© 2007 USPS. All Rights Reserved.Ever wanted to own a classic car but couldn’t afford one? Later this fall, 50 million Detroit classics will roll out of the nation’s 37,000 Post Office show rooms as the second issuance in the America on the Move commemorative stamps series. The 50s Fins and Chrome 42-cent First-Class stamps go on sale Oct. 3, and feature paintings by renowned automobile illustrator Art. M. Fitzpatrick–a ’57 Chrysler 300C, ’57 Lincoln Premiere, ’57 Pontiac Safari, ’57 Studebaker Golden Hawk and a ’59 Cadillac Eldorado. The stamps were modeled after cars still on the road today.

The Postal Service previewed a 10ft. image of the stamps on Saturday before thousands of car enthusiasts attending the nation’s premier classic car event–the Spring Carlisle Collector Car & Swap Meet in Carlisle, PA. The Oct. 3 first-day-of-issue ceremony takes place at the Fall Carlisle Collector Car & Swap Meet where at least two of the cars–the Chrysler 300C and the Pontiac Safari–are expected to be displayed during the ceremony.

“These five beautiful stamp images will be street ready and on sale this October,” said Patrick R. Donahoe, U.S. Postal Service Deputy Postmaster General and Chief Operating Officer. “What better location to preview these classics to the world than Carlisle, where automotive history is kept alive and where the spirit of the classic car is celebrated.”

Donahoe was joined by Carlisle Events co-founder Bill Miller, Jr., to unveil the stamps before a crowd of thousands attending the Mecca of car shows.

“It brings me such pleasure to see the U.S. Postal Service continue the America on the Move commemorative stamp series,” Bill Miller, Jr. commented. “This endeavor has such great appeal to the general automotive enthusiast and Carlisle Events is proud to be a part of America’s past, present and future.”

Also participating in the unveiling were U.S. Postal Service Central Pennsylvania District Manager Edward Burke; Carlisle Postmaster Jeffery Ebersole; Carlisle Events Senior Managers Bill Miller III and Lance Miller; and, Carlisle events Senior Director of Marketing Michael Cornfield.

The Postal Service inaugurated the America on the Move stamp series in 2005 with the Sporty Cars of the 50s stamps that depicted a ’52 Nash Healey, ’53 Chevrolet Corvette, ’53 Studebaker Starliner, ’54 Kaiser Darrin and a ’55 Ford Thunderbird.
