“Power Sharing is Far From Being the Solution in Kenya”, Konare Says

January 28, 2008

The Chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission, the Malian Alpha Oumar Konare slammed the current post-electoral crisis in Kenya, reckoning that “power sharing is far from being the convenient solution to the problem”.

“If we accept to share power as we do with cakes, the problems will still remain, for there will always be malcontents”, Konare said in a thirty minute-long speech he delivered Sunday at the opening of the 12th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council that gathers the African organization’s member countries.

Alpha Oumar Konare read to the ministers a message by the former UN Secretary General, Koffi Annan, who is currently acting as mediator in the Kenyan crisis, in which he revealed “the serious human rights violations in the country”.

The outgoing AU Commission Chairman further reckoned that the solution to the Kenyan political crisis should necessarily go through a respect of good governance, and democratic principles.

“People are talking about genocide in Kenya. What are then the lessons learned from the example of Rwanda,” Konare queried.

Calling on the Kenyans to work towards peace, he also reckoned that it was “under the UA responsibility not to close its eyes to this political turmoil” to which Konare is calling for quick action.

The 12th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council, which is expected to last two days ahead of the 10th ordinary summit of the heads of state and government billed from 31 January to 2 February in the Ethiopian capital, will be attended by about thirty African heads of state and government.

Under the theme “Industrial development in Africa”, the summit is also expected to tackle the election of the Commission’s Chairman and Vice-chairman and commissioners.

The election of the Peace and Security Council’s new members is also included in the session’s agenda.
