President Abdoulaye Wadeof of Senegal Sends Envoy to Mugabe
May 1, 2008
Senegal has joined the diplomatic efforts to break the month-long Zimbabwe election stalemate following the decision by President Abdoulaye Wade to send an envoy to meet President Robert Mugabe on Thursday.
The Senegalese Foreign Minister, Cheikh Tidiane Gadio, met President Mugabe at State House in the capital, Harare, and delivered a special message from President Wade.
Although the contents of the message were not known, APA is reliably informed that the Senegalese leader was curious to see an urgent resolution of Zimbabwe’s election stand-off which is threatening regional peace and security.
Wade has previously been involved in continental efforts to resolve Zimbabwe’s eight-year political crisis and was last in the southern African country late last year on a mission to save mediation talks between Mugabe’s ZANU PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.
He offered to partner South African President Thabo Mbeki as mediator in the talks between the two main Zimbabwean political parties.
The current stand-off between the two Zimbabwean foes stems from the decision by the government to delay publishing the results of presidential election held more than four weeks ago, and the opposition says that is part of a ploy to steal the vote.
There are reports of increasing violence against the opposition.
