March 15, 2008

george-w-bushThe United States President George W. Bush, fresh from his recent visit to Liberia, has described as real the progress made and has expressed optimism for a bright future for the country.

In a letter addressed to the people of Liberia, the American President expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded him during his visit to the country.

A presidential mansion press statement on Friday quoted Mr. Bush as saying that he and his wife appreciated Liberia’s hospitality, adding, “I have now experienced it for myself.”

Mr. Bush said it was a great pleasure for his delegation to visit a country with such deep historic ties to the United States.

“The spirit of the Liberian people was unmistakable. We will not forget all the Liberians who lined the streets to celebrate our visit. We saw the great work that is being done to improve the education system in Liberia and train the Armed Forces of Liberia,” the U.S. President noted in his letter.

The American leader spoke highly of the relationship he enjoys with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. “I am proud to have a strong friendship with President Sirleaf. She is a tireless advocate for Liberia,” President Bush acknowledged. He expressed support for Liberia’s commitment to freedom and democracy, adding, “The United States will continue to be your partner.”

President Bush expressed hopes of visiting Liberia in years to come: “Until then, thank you for your true friendship and kind hospitality. Hosting a presidential event can cause inconveniences, and we thank you for your warmth and patience during our stay,” the American President concluded.

Liberia was among the countries visited by President Bush during his five-nation African tour.
