President Bush Arrival in Ghana
February 19, 2008
US President Bush on Tuesday evening made a historic visit to Ghana amidst tight security. The Air Force 1 aircraft which carried President Bush and his wife, Laura, as well as a business delegation landed at Kotoka International Airport at exactly 19 hours GMT from Rwanda.
The world’s most powerful President was met on arrival by President John Agyekum Kufuor, diplomatic corps, ministers of state and members of the Ghanaian parliament.
President Bush on the other hand was accompanied by Stephen Hardley, US national security adviser while Condolezza Rice is expected to meet Bush in Ghana on Tuesday from Kenya.
The three day visit will focus on HIV/AIDS, malaria control and bilateral talks with President Kufuor.
He will also meet US peace corps in Ghana and make a policy statement.
Mrs. Laura Bush will visit Mamobi Polyclinic and Morning Star International School, a well-to-do private school, all in Accra on Wednesday.
President Kufuor is expected to hold a dinner for Bush and his wife in Accra on Wednesday.
The tight security measures put in place by the police and other security agencies made it difficult for the army of local and international press corps to secure accreditation as they were thoroughly screened.
This is the second time a sitting US President has visited Ghana with Bill Clinton visiting Ghana in 1998.
President Bush is expected to leave Ghana for Liberia, where he will end his five-nation African tour.
