February 4, 2008

In a speech given on Friday at Cuautlancingo, Puebla, Mexico, President Calderón congratulated Volkswagen and the local people on the tenth anniversary of the current model’s production in Mexico. He also said the seven million cars manufactured by Volkswagen in Puebla from its foundation in 1964 until now were a cause for celebration.

The President welcomed the billion dollar investment to take place over the next few years that Volkswagen has just announced internationally.

It has been estimated that by the year 2040, Mexico, which is currently the world’s thirteenth largest economy, will be the fifth largest economy in the world, after China, the United States, India and Brazil. These countries, together with Mexico, will be the five largest economies in the world, meaning that Mexico will probably also be the fifth largest market in the world.

The Mexican market has an enormous strategic value to businesses. It has a direct sea link to Europe and Asia, and is a proudly Latin American country yet the only Latin American country that is also geographically part of North America.

The automobile industry is seen specifically as one of the pillars or engines of the world’s manufacturing industry a crucial part of Mexican industrial production.
