President Joyce Banda Orders the Removal of Vice President Khumbo Kachali As the Overseer of the Electoral Commission
In a dramatic u-turn Malawi’s President Joyce Banda on Tuesday ordered the removal of Vice President Khumbo Kachali as the overseer of the Electoral Commission with immediate effect.
In a statement aired over the Malawi Broadcasting Television, Minister of Information and Civic Education, Moses Kunkuyu said the president recognizes the role the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) plays in delivering credible, free and fair elections and was taking on board the concerns of political activists after Kachali was appointed to oversee the work of the electoral body.
"The president acknowledges that credible, free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy in the country," he said.
He said the last thing the president would tolerate is the undermining of the electoral commission’s independence, non-partisan role and neutrality.
There has been a general outcry after President Banda appointed Kachali in the cabinet to oversee the work of the MEC as the country heads towards tripartite elections in 2014.
