The President of Chad, Mr Idriss Deby, was in Nigeria on Friday to pay a solidarity visit to President Goodluck Jonathan and to re-assure the Nigerian authorities of his intentions to kick start talks on the Lake Chad Basin.
Deby, who was received by his Nigerian counterpart, Jonathna, and the new Vice President Namadi Sambo, said that although his visit was not meant for bilateral talks but assured his hosts that he would send an envoy on the Lake Chad Basin issue.
Deby described the death of Nigeria’s President Umaru Yar’Adua on May 5, as sad and a great loss to Africa. He urged President Jonathan to see Yar’Adua’s death as a challenge in governance and promised to give Jonathan’s administration the needed support to move the nation forward.
Jonathan in response thanked Deby for the visit and promised to implement the agenda and programs initiated Yar’Adua.
The Lake Chad Basin Commission was created in 1964 by the four countries bordering Lake Chad – Niger, Cameroon, Nigeria and Chad. They were joined in 1994 by the Central African Republic.
The aims of the commission are to regulate and control the use of water and other natural resources in the basin and to initiate, promote and coordinate natural resource development projects and research.
The Lake on Nigeria’s side has receded drastically because of the illegal activities carried out in the Lake by some of the member countries, causing a lot of economic and social problems in Nigeria.
