The Bissau Guinean head of state, Malam Bacai Sanha has announced, the end of “plotted coups,” while calling on the army to help “restore peace and stability in the country, as well as in the sub-region.”
“Our army must help restore peace and stability in the country, but also in the sub-region so that our children can go to school and the image of Guinea Bissau is improved in the eyes of the international community,” he said.
He was speaking at the celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of the People (FARP) which is the armed wing of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).
This party was created by late Amilcar Cabral in 1964 in Cassaca (south) as soon as the national liberation struggle started.
“The reform program of the Security and Defense Forces is necessary for the stabilization of Guinea Bissau,” Sanha said, while calling for the setting up of a “republican army under the orders of the political power and ready to defend our national integrity at any time.”
Without peace and stability, he continued, there will be no development in Guinea Bissau.
Hence, he said, my greatest wish is that the population is not afraid of the army any more.
“Therefore, mutual trust between the army and the population should be restored as soon as possible,” he pointed out.
