Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has said that refugees must be supported to learn skills to avoid conflicts with locals over agricultural land.
“In this way, they can play a major role when they return to their countries. We need to look at diversification instead of giving refugees just land for agriculture,” he said.
He said rural settlements offer potential for conflicts with local communities, according to a State House press release on Thursday.
Museveni was meeting with a team of officials from the ministries of Local Government and Foreign Affairs in Entebbe who briefed him about the upcoming African Union special summit in Kampala.
Over 600 delegates including 19 African heads of state and government are expected to meet in Kampala between 19-23 October. The theme of the summit is “African Union addressing the challenge of forced displacement in Africa”.
It is hoped that the meeting will culminate in a declaration that will tackle the root causes and problems of the continent’s 17 million internally displaced persons and refugees.
