Price Hike in Bread Causes Stir in Ghana

April 28, 2008

The sharp increase in the price of bread as a result of increase in price of flour is causing a stir among bread consumers in Ghana. A big loaf of bread which was formally sold at the equivalent of about 80 cents is now sold at about three US dollars.

This is because currently a bag of flour is sold at US$56 as against US$32 about four months ago.

A member of the Ghana Association of Bakers, Gladys Bentum, said on Monday in Accra that the price hike of flour has caused them to lose a lot of profit because people have cut short their rate of bread consumption.

The price hike is also having negative effect on students who have to spend a sizable portion of their pocket money to purchase the commodity.

This high price of bread gives credence to the world food price hike in recent times.
