Qaddafi Foundation Warns Italy Against Re-appointing Controversial Minister
May 3, 2008
The Qaddafi foundation issued on Saturday a statement reacting to a publication mentioning the possible reappointment of the former Italian Reforms minister Roberto Calderoli who flaunted a shirt displaying one of the controversial caricatures which insult Islam in February 2006, APA learned.
In its statement, the foundation recalled the 17 February 2006 Benghazi (Libya) protest march against the Italian minister. Eleven Libyan citizens were killed and many wounded during this demonstration.
The anger of the masses had increased and protestors burned the Italian consulate in the city, the foundation added in its statement. The crises was contained which resulted in the resignation of the Italian minister.
However, since the Italian right-wing won the latest elections news reports speak of a possible nomination of this minister who is considered the real killer of the Libyan nationals.
Roberto Calderoli was a minister in the government of Silvio Berlusconi when he was seen wearing a shirt carrying caricatures insulting Islam.
The chairman of the Qaddafi International foundation for charitable associations and development, Seif Eleslam son of the leader Qaddafi, warns of the seriousness of this issue.
Though the decision of the new Prime Minister is deemed an internal Italian issue, the reappointment of Calderoli will have disastrous effects on the relations between Libya and Italy.
Libya and Italy are linked by strong economic and trade relations particularly in the oil and gas fields.
