South Australian premier Mike Rann is close to gaining a third term for the Labor party though has told supporters it is too early to claim victory.
Despite a swing against it of around 7.4 percent, the Labor party looks to have clung on to power with the ABC election predictor suggesting the most likely outcome is 25 seats to Labor, 18 to the Liberals with 4 Independents.
Rann appeared to react against allegations in the media of an alleged affair with a former Parliamentary House waitress when he said it would be “the sweetest victory of them all,” should he gain a third term.
He acknowledged South Australian voters were unhappy with aspects of the Labor Government’s performance and said his party would look to “reconnect” with the people.
“We will reconnect with the people of this state,” Mr Rann said on election night. “Win or lose.
“We are not claiming victory tonight. It is far too close to call.”
Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond thanked party workers and told supporters on election night that the result had shown South Australians believed the Government had ignored their key concerns. She refused to concede defeat saying the result was still “…too close to call.”
Ms Redmond told party workers last night that she still believed a hung Parliament was a possibility and slammed her opponents by pointing to the “…massive swing towards us from a Government so arrogant they thought they would romp it in”.
