Real Review - The Mummy HD DVD
April 19, 2008
The Mummy is a popcorn flick with a capital P. Overflowing with humor, this movie could as easily be classified as a comedy instead of an action/adventure. With a target audience of teenagers, there is nothing to think about with this plot; it is just a series of obstacles for our hero to overcome much like a video game design. This is typical good vs. evil stuff with the fate of the world at stake.
Brandon Frazier plays the hero, Rick, who not only wants to uncover an ancient Egyptian treasure but rescue the damsel in distress, Evelyn, played by Rachel Weisz. In a race against the competition for the Mummy’s treasures, Rick must not only outwit his nemesis, but the curse of the Mummy as well.
At times I really hated this movie, particularly the performance by Rachel Weisz, who was terrible. At other times, the special effects got me interested along with some of the comic quips. Mostly The Mummy was entertaining, but ultimately the film was forgettable. The Mummy can best be described as an homage to the Indiana Jones series of films while also trying to be campy like the old 1940s serial movies. I suppose it succeeded on that level, but for the most part is was simply fluff.
I did like the setting of ancient Egypt with the artifacts and hieroglyphics and such. Unfortunately, the cinematography was uneven. The desert scenes were shot with too much light, with blown whites and over-yellowed skin-tones. The editing was decent, though, and set a good pace for the film. The Mummy is stuffed with CGI effects, some of which are good, others though are mediocre. On the whole, the movie achieves its objective to be an entertaining adventure flick targeted to an adolescent audience.
I watched The Mummy on HD DVD disc and the PQ was pretty good, though at times there was some grain and some dirt here and there, but mostly it was clean. The audio track was 5.1 Dolby Plus and it was serviceable, with the dialog clearly distinguishable against the soundtrack and sound effects. The disc includes a commentary track, some deleted scenes, a documentary, and the original trailer.
Rating: 6.5
