Rebels have Seized Chadian Capital, Sources Say

The Chadian rebels on Saturday captured N’djamena, the capital city, after hours of fighting against the government troops, but President Idriss Deby is reported to be still in the capital, APA learnt Saturday from corroborating sources.
Shooting was still heard in some districts of the Chadian capital. The rebels were reported top be going round to clear the pockets of resistance and secure the capital where looting was also reported.
On Friday, rebel units were at only 50km from N’djamena. They continued their march and captured the capital in the wee hours of Saturday.
The African Union heads of state summit, which ended on Saturday morning, issued a statement reiterating its refusal to recognize any government that came to power undemocratically.
The Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso and the Libyan leader, Mouammar Qaddafi had been chosen to take care of the new situation in Chad.
