Red Cross Launches National Progam to Trace Displaced Children in Kenya
February 22, 2008
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in conjunction with the Kenyan Red Cross on Friday announced the launching of a nation wide program to help trace families of internally displaced children that went missing after the post-election violence triggered by last year’s disputed presidential elections displacing 300,000 people.
According to the ICRC, thousands of adults and many children have already been separated from their families, saying that over 400 reunifications have already taken place throughout the country with many more requests underway.
“Tracing teams have already visited hospitals to identify patients admitted without knowledge of their families. Red Cross experts are also working with mortuary and municipal officials to ensure proper identification on where to get help”, said a joint statement between the two organizations at the ICRC offices in Nairobi.
