Reports Claim Police in Uzbekistan Have Tightened Control Over Mosques for Holy Ramadan

September 8, 2008

The Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assigned policemen to every mosque in capital Tashkent after holy fasting started last week, Ferghana.ru sources in Uzbekistan report.

“All parishioners are observed, especially those who come to pray five times daily, some policemen talk with whom they think show special religious devotion,” Adkham akya, former policeman and frequent visitor to one of the Tashkent mosques told Ferghana.ru.

He thinks that tightened police control on the Holy Ramadan is to “show that the state controls each step, and in case something happens, anyone can be blamed for being a member of Hizb-ut-Tahrir,” or other extremist organization.

Policemen also patrol mahallahs, traditional neighborhood communities.
