March 12, 2008
Research confirming the existence of the pigmy hippopotamus, one of the ancient species of hippopotamus which were considered extinct in the world, has been concluded in Liberia.
The research has confirmed that there was a large population of the pigmy hippopotamus in the Sarpo National Park in Liberia’s south-eastern Sinoe County.
According to the research conducted by Liberia’s Forestry Development Authority and the Zoological Society of London, Liberia is the only country in the world where the pigmy hippopotamus still lives.
The managing director of the Forestry Development Authority, John Woods told reporters in Monrovia on Monday that the existence of the pigmy hippo was confirmed through camera trap technology.
Mr. Woods said a total of 40 cameras were mounted in the jungle to monitor the movement of animals for 275 nights.
The presence of the pigmy hippo in Liberia was known before now, but this animal is said to have fled the country during the war.
John Woods said the discovery could boost Liberia’s tourism potential.
