Residents of Blast-Torn Kagan Evacuated Again

July 16, 2008

Reports indicate that new evacuations of residents have occurred in Kagan city in the Bukhara region which only last week suffered from a series of devastating blasts at a Soviet-era artillery depot, according to a Ferghana.ru source in Bukhara.

After the explosions occurred on July 10, nearly the entire city was evacuated to Bukhara.

There has been no official statement on what caused the strong blasts that were reported to have been felt several miles away. The only government statement regarding the explosions states the incident claimed three lives and left 21 injured and was presumably caused by a fire.

One of the members of the Kagan evacuation team in Bukhara told Ferghana.ru that the new evacuation was necessary as the ongoing disarming of unexploded shells endangers civilians. During the disarming of munitions, electricity and gas remain cut off throughout Kagan.

Meanwhile, Kagan residents are overwhelmed with panic as rumors about the possibility of much more powerful explosions persist.

Officials deny this information is accurate.
