Rhode Island Most Wanted Murder Suspect Captured By U.S. Marshals in Virginia
U.S. Marshal Bobby Mathieson announces the capture of Darrell Johnson. Johnson was wanted by Pawtucket Police Department and has been on Rhode Island’s most wanted list since the homicide of victim Joshua Burgo in July.
An altercation broke out between two rival groups in Rhode Island on July 6. It is alleged that Johnson shot Burgo in the chest when the altercation escalated. Burgo’s murder is believed to be part of an ongoing feud between rival neighborhood groups, in which at least five other people have been shot since May.
On Nov. 24, Deputy U.S. Marshals in the District of Rhode Island developed information showing that Johnson was in the Norfolk, VA area. Deputies in Rhode Island then contacted their fellow deputies in the Norfolk Division of the Eastern District of Virginia to request assistance in locating and apprehending this suspect.
On Nov. 28, Norfolk deputies arrived at a suspected address for Johnson. After a short time, deputies observed a male matching the suspect’s description leave the address and walk towards a local convenience store. Deputies were able to positively identify Johnson inside of the store as he walked up to the counter. At approximately 12 p.m., responding deputies then entered the store and arrested Johnson without incident.
