Rice Traders Fall in Line With Government of Sri Lanka
April 20, 2008
Wholesale traders in rice have decided to respect the decision of the Sri Lankan President to set a ceiling for the price of rice, following a crack down on errant traders in Pettah yesterday by the Consumer Affairs Authorty (CAA).
The President of the Food Importers and Distributors Association, S.P. Sami said yesterday that the Pettah wholesale traders had agreed to sell locally produced rice in line with the controlled prices announced by the Government.
Earlier the Government announced that tough measures will be taken against those selling rice above the stipulated price as well as traders who were hoarding rice. The Government has taken steps to import rice as a means of stabilizing the price of rice, in particular from Myanmar.
