125px-Flag_of_Nigeria.svg-Copy13With less than 24 hours to the Christmas celebrations, no fewer than 23 persons have been confirmed dead and 16 others injured in a motor accident on the Talata Mafara-Gusau road in Talata Mafara, north-east Nigeria on Wednesday.

The accident occurred at Gidan-Kano village when an articulated vehicle laden with cattle and passengers skipped off the road and somersaulted.

The driver was trying to control the vehicle on a narrow sharp bend, but lost control and skipped off the road, reports said.

The vehicle, which was conveying the passengers and cattle to southern Nigeria killed 20 people instantly while the remaining three died in the hospital.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) spokesperson, Kabiru Musa, who confirmed the incident, said the 16 injured persons were in Talata-Mafara General Hospital.

He said despite the efforts of the commission to enlighten the motorists on the dangers of violating the traffic regulations, road accidents were on the increase.
