Rome And Tripoli Seal Multi-billion Deal And Restore Relations

September 2, 2008

Libya and Italy have sealed a deal worth billions of pounds as part of a package of investment and reparations for 32 years of colonial rule. Diplomatic sources in London revealed the deal was signed over the weekend by Italian and Libyan leaders at a huge ceremony in Benghazi.

In attendance, the Italian Prime Minster, Silvio Berlusconi, formally apologized to Colonel Gaddafi on behalf of Libya.

“Italy fully and morally recognizes the damage inflicted on the Libyan people during the colonial period, through 1911 to 1943,” the Italian leader said.

Diplomats have been quick to describe this development as much more than healing past wounds as Italy hopes to secure access to Libya’s oil and gas reserves and development contracts, as well as to receive greater co-operation in controlling illegal immigration of Africans.
