The Rwandan government has decided to open a general consulate in Lubumbashi, the capital of the Katanga province, in the south-east of DRC to strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The announcement was made on Friday in the local newspapers by Amandin Rugia, the Rwanda ambassador to DRC, at the end of his meeting with Mr. Guibert Paul Yav, the vice-governor of the Katanga province where he was on a mission inside the DRC for the first time.
The Rwandan diplomat said that his government was willing to open a general consulate in Lubumbashi because the DRC is a huge country. As such, both Rwandan and Congolese nationals from this eastern region find it difficult to travel to Kinshasa to get consular documents.
He defined his mission in Lubumbashi as part of preliminary exploration and contacts with a view to opening a general consulate for Rwanda. The vice-governor of Katanga hailed this initiative and pledged to support it so that the relationships between the DRC and Rwanda will be strengthened.
After more than 15 years of armed conflict through rebel groups from both sides, Kigali and Kinshasa resumed diplomatic relationships last year by appointing their respective ambassadors. These two countries along with Burundi were former Belgian colonies whose diplomatic relationships have been hindered by civil wars between militias.
