November 11, 2008

Rwandan state minister for environment, lands and mining Vincent Karega, has launched the first ever computerization of land registration and title issuance in Rwanda, APA has learned.

Speaking on Monday during the launch, Karega urged land owners to ensure proper land use while working in accordance with government policy of land consolidation for better yields.

“Land should be well managed by terracing, planting of trees and growing of better crops as advised by the ministry of agriculture,” Karega said at the launch of the project held in Rwaza village of Musanze district in Northern Province

The pilot study of the launched project was carried out in four districts of Karongi, Kirehe, Musanze and Gasabo with the use of satellite identification and mapping of plots.

According to the director of land office, Eugene Rurangwa, the office worked with land owners to demarcate their plots, fed the data in the computer for cadastral index maps which indicate owners, plots and their numbers.

“This will help land wrangles, since it will easily identify someone’s plot using his name and plot number. There will not be any more cases of people grabbing pieces of their neighbors’ land,” Rurangwa said.

According to residents, the registration and issuance of land titles will enhance their sense of ownership to the land and will ease their access to bank loans.
