SADC Gives Thumps Up for Zimbabwe Polls
March 30, 2008
Southern African election observers Sunday gave Zimbabwe’s general election the thumps up, despite allegations of vote rigging by other foreign observers.
In a statement issued at the close of its mission, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) declared Zimbabwe’s 29 March polls as “credible, free and fair”.
Despite raising concerns about threats by the security forces against the opposition, the SADC observers said the polls were held in accordance with regional election guidelines.
The SADC statement comes a day after another observer mission from the Pan African Parliament questioned Zimbabwe government motives in registering more than 8,000 voters on a non-existent plot in the capital, Harare.
The Zimbabwean authorities are yet to make known poll results, more than a day after the close of voting, a development that has raised fears of vote tempering by the government.
