125px-Flag_of_Samoa.svg9Samoa has become the one hundred and eight eighth (188th) member of the biggest and global police network – Interpol. Interpol’s Secretary General Ronald Noble left Samoa last weekend after finalizing Samoa’s official membership of the European based network.

Noble said that it is important to Interpol for Samoa to be a member and the exchange of information and monitoring of possible covert and criminal operations has now started between the two entities.

Samoa will work through the Trans-national Crime Unit based at the Government Building and the Ministry of Police. Noble said that prior to being a member, Interpol did provide Samoa with information of some foreigners suspected of criminal activities. He said one was a convicted rapist who was caught in Samoa through information passed through Interpol.

Interpol was established in 1923 to exchange information between police networks mainly in Europe but later spread around the world with increased global criminal activities.

The organisation facilitates information exchange on real police work – 24 hours a day. And relies on national police on the ground to conduct investigations as it respects the sovereignty of all its member nations.
