Scores Arrested in Zimbabwe Strike Crackdown

April 16, 2008

Zimbabwe’s main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party said Wednesday that scores of its supporters have been arrested in a police crackdown on organizers of a fledgling nationwide strike that began on Tuesday.

The MDC said that several of its supporters were arrested countrywide in a police swoop targeted at ring-leaders of the strike called to press for the urgent release of results of presidential elections held on March 29.

“At least 20 MDC activists in Harare have been arrested and the party is still trying to locate where they are detained,” an MDC spokesperson said.

The police have warned they would ruthlessly deal with any acts of violence arising from the strike.

The strike was largely ineffective as most Zimbabweans went about their business Tuesday.

Things returned to normal Wednesday, while the police maintained roadblocks in all major towns.
