Second Kenyan Opposition Politician Murdered
February 1, 2008
Kenya’s opposition legislator David Kimutai Too, was shot dead on Thursday in the Rift Valley town of Eldoret, making it the second member of parliament for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party killed this week.
Speaking to reporters in Nairobi, ODM spokesman, Tony Gachoka said Too was shot dead by a traffic policeman in Eldoret town 310 KM northwest of Nairobi, under unclear circumstances along with an unidentified woman.
Gachoka said that “the killing is making Kenya’s political crisis grave day by day.”
Too was the legislator for Ainamoi constituency in the Rift Valley Province and was just newly elected in last month’s general elections.
Rift Valley province has so far witnessed the worst ethnic violence with just over 80 people killed last weekend.
The police made no comment following the killing of the legislator.
Earlier this week, another ODM opposition legislator Melitus Were was gunned down outside the gate of his Nairobi home with the opposition leader, Raila Odinga saying that Were’s killing was a political assassination.
