Senegal, Mauritania Sign New Fishery Agreement
March 26, 2008
Mauritania and Senegal have signed a new one-year fishery agreement in Nouakchott, APA learnt from sources close to the Mauritanian capital.
Under the accord, 300 traditional fishing permits in the Mauritanian seawaters were granted to Senegalese boat owners that are expected in return to unload 15% of their catch in Mauritania.
Ten industrial fishing permits in the Mauritanian seawaters were also issued for the Senegalese tuna boats that are expected to permanently engage 40 Mauritanians, including 3 wholesale fish merchants and one inspector for each boat.
Mauritania will in compensation receive taxes from the Senegalese fishing boats and benefit from five demersals coastal fishing in the Senegalese seawaters.
The new deal was signed on the Mauritanian side by the Fishing Minister Assane Soumaré, and the Senegalese State Minister and Maritime, Transport Economy, Fishing and Apiculture Minister Souleymane Ndéné NDiaye.
“The prevailing mood all along the negotiation of the accord shows that the brotherly ties between the two countries are more important than the divergences on economic interests”, the Senegalese Minister said.
The just-ended accord granted to Senegal 270 traditional fishing permits in the Mauritanian seawaters, and an unloading of 26% of the catch in compensation.
The rate was reduced to 20%. Mauritania gained 5 fishing permits in the Senegalese deep water in compensation, and taxes on the Senegalese fishing boats.
