The Coordinator of the Unit to Promote Child Protection (CAPE), Ramatoulaye Ndao Diouf, has highlighted the importance of a sub-regional approach to find a solution to issue of street children.
“Even if Senegal can resolve the problem of street children, there are indeed many children coming from the sub-region. Therefore, thrashing out the problem in our country alone is not enough ; we must address it at the sub-regional level,” she said.
Mrs Diouf, who was speaking when closing a two-day symposium on children’s rights, stressed the importance of “having sub-regional strategies, the full support of children in the different policies.”
“The show (rape, incest, abuse) that we always see nowadays must stop. This is not acceptable, this is not normal (…),” she hammered, stressing that protecting children’s rights must be “a priority for all.”
The idea of this meeting, Mrs Diouf said, is “having something positive because we are always here talking about rape, child abuse, but it is also worthwhile to mention the positive things that have been done in the field.”
She said the symposium was also intended “to bring all the actors from French-speaking countries as well as from Europe and those in the sub-region for each to present their examples of good practices relating to children.”
