Senior Ivorian Security Personnel to Testify in Liberian Treason Trial
March 6, 2008
The Criminal Court now retrying former Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) general Charles Julue and Colonel Andrew Dorbor on charges of attempting to overthrow the Liberian government, has confirmed that some senior Ivorian security personnel would be brought in to testify in the re-trial of the treason case.
Judge Peter Gbaynee-wleh disclosed in open court that the government has forwarded the name of the Ivorian regional commander Wright dela Foss to testify.
De la Foss is the army personnel with whom Dorbor was allegedly striking a deal for the purchase of 200 AK-47 riffles and 3,000 military uniforms before his arrest.
Judge Gbaynee Wleh hinted that the Ivorian Chief of Staff might also be brought in to testify.
The disclosures come after Junior Gaye, government’s insider witness, was discharged from the witness stand Wednesday.
Gaye told the court that there was actually a plan to overthrow the UP-led government on January 16, 2006, but that the plot was put off due to the presence in the country of U.S First Lady Laura Bush, U.S Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and other foreign guests.
He alleged that retired General Charles Julu and others sent for him from La Cote d’Ivoire to form part of the plot.
