Some 70 delegates from seven countries are meeting in Seychelles to set up an action plan to fight piracy and to build ties with international bodies. The delegates are from Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Maldives, Madagascar and Yemen among other countries.
Speakers and observers have come from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Interpol to discuss how to implement the Djibouti Code of Conduct, an anti-piracy agreement signed on January 29 this year by 10 regional countries.
Topics up for discussion will include recent developments in countering piracy and armed robbery against ships, the role of the Seychelles National Coordinator for Piracy, and coordination with third party ships and warships.
The sources say representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Combined Maritime Force, European Union’s Naval Force will also address the gathering and give guidance and advice.
The conference will end on Friday.
