125px-Flag_of_the_Seychelles.svg13Twenty-three Seychellois police and fire officers have received their certificates after training to take part in overseas peacekeeping operations.

The UN peacekeeping course was organized by the East African Police Chiefs’ Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO) with the help of Interpol and the Africa-based Institute for Security Studies.

Police Superintendent Maxime Figaro handed the certificates to the trainees from the Fire Brigade, the regular police and the Public Security Support Wing.

He told the officers that they are now well equipped to take part in missions under the command of the United Nations, as well as in African Union peacekeeping operations.

He added that Seychelles has initiated the training following an EAPCCO resolution adopted last year, which demanded that all member states have a group of trained peacekeepers on standby at any given time.

Also Figaro averred that the training will be beneficial not only in peacekeeping operations, but will be an important tool in dealing with unlawful events in the islands.

For his part, Assistant Police Superintendent Roy Banane declared that officers from Seychelles have already helped in a peace support operation in Comoros during its elections.

He added that they are now equipped to help bigger countries and that they have learned how to behave when they are in UN or AU uniforms in order to ensure the security of civilians.
