125px-Flag_of_the_Seychelles.svgThe Seychelles Ministry of Health is to seek the help of the Cuban government to make available a landmark treatment for diabetes that has a very high success rate in avoiding amputations following a visit of President James Michel to Cuba.

Sources indicate that during his visit Michel met with the Cuban Minister for the Environment, Science and Technology, Jose Miyar Barruecos, at the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Havana, the Cuban capital.

The sources add that the center has developed many vaccines now widely used around the world, as well as treatments for many kinds of diseases, including diabetes.

Also the sources add that the two governments are also expected to collaborate on pilot projects using vaccines and rodent control to mitigate leptospirosis in Seychelles.

Following the visit, Michel declared that Cuba has become a world leader in developing biotechnology and has patented thousands of new medical products and that Seychelles would be grateful to receive Cuban expertise in the medical field, the sources indicate.

And the sources point out that Michel also visited the Latin American School of Medical Sciences set up by the Cuban government to help students from developing countries to get a world-class medical degree.

President Michel indicated that Seychelles has already benefited a lot from the cooperation programs with Cuba, and his visit has given momentum to further accelerate exchanges and collaboration, the sources conclude.
