Sharia Board in Nigeria’s Kebbi State Prosecutes 652 Offenders

June 7, 2008

The Sharia Hisbah Board in Kebbi state in northern Nigeria arrested 652 offenders for illegal use of drugs and display of obscene photographs between January and April this year.

The Secretary of the board, Alhaji Manual Gaza, told journalists on Friday in Birnin Kebbi, about 700km from Abuja that six gamblers, two drunkards, two drug addicts and seven prostitutes were apprehended within the period.

He expressed concern that 100 young boys were arrested for consuming illegal drugs (D10) while 150 others engaged in obscene behavior.

Gaza assured that the state government was poised to eliminate such anti-social behavior in the state.

According to him, two persons were caught for stealing while two were guilty of character assassination and 13 others received ‘rehabilitative warnings’.

He said that the board reconciled 30 persons, reunited 24 lost children with their families while six abandoned children and one rape case were resolved.

Geza said that the board was working closely with the police to ensure the prosecution of offenders.

Kebbi state and some other states in northern Nigeria adopted the Sharia legal system when Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999.
