Six Die in Fighting At Mogadishu’s Main Market
August 20, 2008
Six people died and ten others were injured in a fierce battle between Islamic warriors and Somali government troops and their Ethiopian allies in Mogadishu’s main market of Bakaro.
“A mortar shell landed in front of our shop and three of our customers died and four others were wounded,” Saalim Ali Yusuf, a shopkeeper in Bakaro market, told APA by phone.
“It was dangerous to stay in the market. All business areas are closed,” he added.
Other reports says five people died and four others injured as mortar shell landed in a store where people were shopping in preparation for the holly month of Ramadan.
The battle started when the Islamist warriors attacked Alikamiin village where Ethiopians have a military base near Bakaro market. Both sides were using heavy weapons including rocket propelled grenades, mortar shells and machine guns.
The battle comes after the Tuesday night signing of a cease fire agreement by the Somali factions in Djibouti.
