Smugglers Shoot Dead an Egyptian Officer on the Border with Israel

An Egyptian police officer was shot dead on Monday along the Egyptian border with Israel when a group of smugglers engaged in helping illegal immigrants to cross the border into Israel opened fire on the security forces who confronted them, an official statement said.

According to the statement, the smugglers, who were trying to help a number of Arab and foreign infiltrators to cross into Israel, fired on Egyptian security forces who tried to stop them.

The security forces exchanged fire with them, resulting in the death of the officer after several bullets hit him in the abdomen.

State media said that First Lieutenant Mohammed Farouk Ali Hassan Al Qersh from the Central Security Forces died in the Beer Moeen region on the border between Egypt and Israel.

The firing started when the smugglers were helping the infiltrators to reach Israel from Egypt, while the security forces were also trying to stop them.
