The Somali government has disclosed that it intercepted $3.5 million when it was being flown from Mogadishu airport to the northern city of Galkayo.
The Somali government Treasury Minister Abdurahman Omar Yarisow showed the money to journalists during a ceremony held at the Mogadishu airport where the amount was intercepted.
“The criminals were going to use this money to instigate violence and insecurity in the Puntland state of Somalia and we are very grateful to the airport police who intercepted this act of crime.
“Police are questioning the man who had this money and his case in under investigation and will be brought to court as soon as possible,” the minister told reporters.
Last month, the Somali government arrested two men at the Mogadishu airport in the possession of one million US dollars as they were about to fly to the city of Hargeisa, the capital of the break away Republic of Somaliland.
But sources close to the Somali police command confirmed to APA that the men were later released after they paid 7000 dollars to the police in exchange for their release.
