Barre Ali Barre, the Deputy Chair man of Hezb Al-Islam (Islamic party), was killed by three men armed with pistols and later fled.

“They shot him on the head and died on the spot,” Salim Hassan, a resident In Bakaro market told APA by phone.

It is not clear the motive behind the killing of the officer. Nobody has claimed responsibility of the assassination.

Islamist warriors are launching daily offensives against Somali’s weak government vowing to topple it.

Somalia had been plunged into anarchy following the ouster of former President Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, when warlords used their clan-based militias to remove Barre only to turn on each other for power, leading to constant inter-clan war which left thousands killed and millions displaced.
