Lesotho on Friday received $4 million from the South African government for the upgrading of a 47.4 km road at Sani Top, 340km north of the capital Maseru, to Mokhotlong, 270 km from Maseru the capital.
The funds have been provided by the South African government through the Ministry of Water and Environmental Affairs, while on the Lesotho side, the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture received the funds since the work was basically a tourism development project.
Speaking at the occasion, Lesotho Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture, Lebohang Nts’inyi, said the decision to upgrade the road was taken by both governments at the Bilateral Steering Committee of the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier project in 2006.
She thanked the South African government for the contribution, saying it was only startup money for the road, which is estimated to cost around US$34.2 million to be completed.
The minister pointed out that when the road has been completed, it will make lives bearable for residents of Mokhotlong who do their shopping in Petermaritzburg in South Africa, which is 128 km away.
For the South African government, the Deputy Minister of Water and environment Affairs, Rejoice Mabudafhasi said the agreement that was signed by Lesotho and South Africa five years ago, created a platform for development of joint projects which have mutual benefit for the people in the two countries.
