South Africa Donates 500 Elephants to Zambia

South Africa has donated 500 elephants to Zambia to help the country re-stock the animal species whose numbers have dwindled due to poachers over the years, Zambian tourism minister Michael Kaingu told journalists on Thursday.
The minister said the giant animals would be arriving in the country soon.

Zambia used to have a sizable population of elephants about two decades ago but uncontrolled poaching led to the animals almost becoming extinct, and the donation is part of efforts by the government to re-stock.

The other animal species whose population has been severely reduced due to poaching is the rhinoceros for which a similar re-stocking program is in place.

The minister said discussions are now underway to arrange the transportation of the elephants which would be distributed to game parks and game management areas (GMA) throughout the country.
