125px-Flag_of_South_Africa.svg2The South African cabinet has approved the revised policy on the health classification and selective deployment of stable HIV positive South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members.

The new policy provides for the recruitment and selective deployment of HIV positive people into the National Defence Force, government spokesman Themba Maseko told a media briefing on Thursday.

The decision marked the culmination of a policy review process initiated in 2006 and was in compliance with a 2008 High Court decision that ruled the existing policy was unconstitutional.

The old policy excluded HIV positive persons from being recruited and external deployment.

The military health services structures would provide the necessary support to SANDF personnel, Maseko said.
