The police in Imo State in south-eastern Nigeria have confirmed the abduction of a South African journalist and his Nigerian colleague in the state.
A spokesman for the Imo State police command, Mr. Linus Nwiwu, told journalists on Tuesday in Owerri, about 550km from Abuja that the two journalists were abducted on Monday along the Owerri-Onitsha road and that details of the incident were still sketchy.
’’We have received reports of the abduction of the two journalists. We understand one is a South African working for SuperSports Television while the other is a Nigerian working for Minaj Television.
’’ No group has so far claimed responsibility and no ransom have been made,’’ he said.
Initial reports said that armed robbers had stopped a vehicle carrying the journalists, but on seeing the South African passport with the Super Sports reporter, they decided to abduct him.
