May 2, 2008

The South Sudan presidential advisor, Justin Yak, and the South Sudan minister of military affairs, Dominic Dim Deng, as well as 22 others died in a plane crash on Friday, a press statement said.

The plane crashed about 200miles from the capital of South Sudan, Juba (1700km from Khartoum), on its way from the southern town of Wau, sources from South Sudan told APA.

The Director of the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs in Sudan’s government of National Unity, Atif Kiir, confirmed to APA that the Government of South Sudan presidential Advisor Justin Yak and the Military Affairs Minister of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army Lt. General Dominic Dim died in a plane crash near Rumbek.

According to Kiir, the plane belonged to the Southern Sudan Air Connection Company.

“The pilot of the Kenya-registered plane had told the control tower in Rumbek that one of the engines had developed technical problems and asked for permission to land in Rumbek but few minutes later the tower lost communications with the plane,” he added.

Officials on the ground in Rumbek said that a helicopter was sent to the crash site and found the plane on fire.
